BOX SCORE
The Navy Train evened the Fall World Series with a 5-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Navy did their damage in the second inning as they pushed across three runs without the virtue of a hit. Dustin Cartas drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a passed ball. Hunter Johnson drove in the runner when his fly ball to right field was mishandled. With runners on the corners, a potential double-play ball was bobbled, allowing the runner from third to score. Navy scored its third run of the inning as a pickoff attempt to first got away from the first baseman and allowed the runner from third to score.
The advantage grew in the third as The Navy Train loaded the bases with one. Matthew Johnson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Â
Navy looked to blow the game open in the fourth as they loaded the bases with no outs. Cartas was hit by a pitch to plate the only run that would score in the frame.
The Golden Boys got their only run of the game in the sixth as Derek Yoder started the inning with a double to right field. After moving to third on a groundout, Clay Kelly drove in the run with a single to right field.
Cody Maerz earned the victory after allowing just three hits and striking out four over five shutout innings. Andrew Bramley suffered the loss after giving up five runs, two earned, on three hits over four innings. John Lollar pitched three shutout innings for Gold.
The two teams close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
