BOX SCORE
The Golden Boys used a three-run top of the seventh inning to erase a deficit and win the Fall World Series with a 5-4 victory over the Navy Train Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the seventh, Rick Linton reached on a bunt base hit. Dalton West followed with a four-pitch walk ahead of Tyler Hardin's RBI single through the right side. Clay Kelly advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Ty Stetson tied the game with a hard-hit single past the drawn-in infield. Anthony Bayus plated the game-winning run with a groundout to second base.
Navy took its first lead of the game in the sixth as BT Wichman delivered a leadoff double to center field. A fielding error on a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners. A successful double steal, and throwing error scored one run and left a runner at second. Matt McGowan delivered an RBI double to left center, before scoring himself on a throwing error with two outs.
Gold jumped out to an early lead as Stetson doubled to left field to start the game. He later stole third and scored on a throwing error. Stetson scored another run in the third as he singled and stole second, before scoring on a Bayus double to right field.
Navy got on the board in the fifth as Tyler Lawrence plated McGowan with a single through the right side. McGowan reached on a base hit and went to second on a wild pitch.
Kyle Cornett picked up the victory after allowing four runs, three earned, over two innings. Mathews took the loss after giving up three runs in one inning of work. Cameron Wallace picked up his second save of the weekend after retiring all three hitters he faced.
Stetson was the catalyst of the Gold offense by going 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Bayus added a pair of RBIs. McGowan led Navy by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dustin Cartas added a pair of hits.
The weekend series concluded the Fall season. The Breds will now begin preparation for the 2014 season, which kicks off Feb. 14 against Illinois State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Reagan Field.
