2014 Schedule
Eighteen homes game, six 2013 NCAA Tournament teams and five early season tournaments highlight the 2014 Murray State softball schedule, announced Monday. The 2014 schedule marks the first time in program history that the Racers will compete in five early season tournaments.
"I am really looking forward to this upcoming season," said head coach Kara Amundson. "Our team is getting better and continuously preparing for the spring. Â This is the first time in program history that we are starting off with five early season tournaments and I think that will really help us when the OVC portion of our schedule arrives. Â I am also excited about the strength of our schedule and know that our players will rise to the challenge from day one."
The Racers will open 2014 in Baton Rouge, La., with the Tiger Classic hosted by LSU. The season opener will take place on Feb. 7 at Tiger Field against Southern Illinois at 1 p.m., and will be followed at 4 p.m., with a game against Big 10 foe Minnesota. Two days later, Murray State will wrap up play in the tournament against host LSU.
From there, MSU Â will travel to Woodstock, Ga., for Kennesaw State's Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament on Feb. 15-16, followed by a trip to Southaven, Miss., for Memphis' Blues City Classic. The Racers will begin March with the Coach B Classic at Southern Illinois on March 1-2, before playing their final early season tournament the next weekend, March 8-9, at Evansville.
The Racers will meet three NCAA tournament teams in early season tournaments with LSU and Minnesota at the Tiger Classic and IPFW at the Evansville Invitational. Other teams of note in the tournament portion of the MSU schedule include two Big 12 teams in Kansas and perennial power Oklahoma State.
For spring break, the Racers will head to Alabama for a doubleheader with Auburn and a single game with 2013 Super Regional qualifier UAB. The remainder of MSU's non-conference schedule includes a March 26 visit from another 2013 NCAA Tournament team, Western Kentucky, an April 9 home doubleheader with Evansville and an April 30 game at Memphis.
On March 15, the Racers will kick-off OVC play against arch-rival UT Martin in grand fashion with the grand opening of Racer Field. The doubleheader will be the first ever games played on the brand new on-campus facility since its completion early last summer.
Other conference series of note include a home doubleheader with defending OVC champions Jacksonville State on April 6 and a three-game set at home with Eastern Illinois on March 29-30. On April 26-27, the Racers will close out their 2014 home slate with three games against SIU Edwardsville that will include Senior Day festivities. The next weekend, MSU will travel to Cape Girardeau to end the regular-season with a trio of games against Southeast Missouri.
The 2014 OVC Softball Championship will take place May 7-10 at the site of the top-seed. The winner of the tournament will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The 2014 Racers will return six starters from last year's team that finished third at the OVC Tournament for the second consecutive year. Among the returners is 2013 All-OVC selection and Capital One Academic All-American shortstop Alexa Becker, OVC All-Newcomer infielder Shelbey Miller and Capital One Academic All-District pitcher CheyAnne Gaskey.
Miller led the Racers in their eight fall contests with a batting average of .519, while Becker followed behind with a .433 average and a team-high slugging percentage of .800. Gaskey also had a break-out fall as she went 4-0 in five appearances with a 0.00 ERA, a .102 opponent's batting average, 18 strikeouts and only five walks.
