2013-14 Schedule
The Murray State men's basketball team held their first practice of the 2013-14 season Thursday afternoon at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers are coming off a 21-10 season in which they were again on the brink of making their 16th trip to the NCAA Tournament. Only an overtime loss to Belmont in the Ohio Valley Conference championship game kept the Racers out. 21 wins marked the fourth straight 20-win season for MSU that has been accomplished only once (1996-00) under former coaches Mark Gottfried and Tevester Anderson.
MSU is also looking for their 27th straight winning season. Their current 26-season run began in the 1987-88 season and has been built by seven coaches including the two seasons by Prohm. Only Syracuse (43), Kansas (30) and Arizona (29) have longer streaks than the Racers.
Head Coach Steve Prohm's third edition is a drastic change without all-stars Isaiah Canaan and Ed Daniel. The Racers' roster features just one senior, Dexter Fields and five players that have never suited up in a Murray State uniform. The Racers have nine underclassmen led by sophomores Jeffery Moss and Zay Jackson. Junior college transfers Jonathan Fairell and Jarvis Williams bolster the roster as well as Clemson transfer T.J. Sapp who becomes eligible to play in December.
"It's wide-open because I don't know yet if we'll start four guards and a big or three guards and two bigs," Prohm said to the reporters that gathered for the opening practice. "Right now I'm playing with how do we need to play. Our core things will be the same like getting better defensively. But I'll keep and eye on these guys offensively and see what suits us best."
MSU again has a challenging schedule that features road games at Valparaiso, Old Dominion, Auburn, St. Mary's and Dayton. MSU's home games are tough with Middle Tennessee, Evansville, Lipscomb and Southern Illinois visiting the Racers' home court.
"The schedule is difficult, but I think it can help this team grow because we're going to have some challenges and play in some tough environments," Prohm said. "But in this program, we want to play that type of a schedule. With the teams we have coming into our gym, we need the fans to come out and make it a great environment."
Ohio Valley Conference media day is set for Oct. 22 in Nashville. It's at that time when the preseason team will be announced and the predicted order of finish.
The Racers get the 2013-14 season going with an exhibition game against the Freed-Hardeman Lions (Nov. 2) at the CFSB Center and open the season on the road at Valparaiso (Nov. 8).
Murray State enters their 16th season of basketball at the CFSB Center and hope to keep it as one of the toughest places to play for visiting teams. MSU is 182-32 (.850) all-time and 26-5 (.838) in the Prohm era. More than 160,000 fans have watched the Racers in the CFSB Center in the last two seasons combined.
