Murray State women's basketball head coach Rob Cross met with local media Tuesday in advance of the 2013-14 season. After an opening statement and lunch, senior Jessica Winfrey also met with members of the press to give her thoughts on the upcoming season.
"We have a lot of question marks, but we are excited about our team," said Cross. "We only have one player returning that will be playing the same role she has in the past, everyone else is either in a different role or is new to college basketball. We are looking forward to seeing what happens. While there are some question marks, one thing I do know, is that they will play with a lot of passion and desire and it will be fun and exciting to watch."
The Racers return just one starter and three additional players that saw minutes from last year's squad. Winfrey returns for her senior season after averaging 4.6 points and 7.8 rebounds a year ago as a starter, while junior Keiona Kirby will move into a bigger role after contributing 4.7 points in 11 minutes a game last season.
Looking to help the returning players will be a bevy of freshman including a pair of Kentucky All-State selections in Lawrence County's Taylor Porter and Murray High's Janssen Starks. Also looking to make an immediate impact will be junior college transfer Jashae Lee. Lee comes to MSU after averaging 11 points and seven boards per game for New Mexico JC last season where she earned All-Conference and All-Region honors for her efforts.
Fans will get their first look at the 2013-14 Racer women's basketball team Sunday afternoon at the CFSB Center. Murray State will kick-off its season with an exhibition game against in-state opponent Berea at 4 p.m.
