Murray State's men's and women's cross-country teams will travel to Morehead, Ky. to compete in the OVC Championship meet. This will be the 52nd men's OVC Championship meet and 35th women's contest. The meet will be held at the Eagle Trace Golf Course in Morehead, Ky. The men's 8K is set to start at 10:45 a.m. with the women's 5K to follow at 11:45 a.m.
Head Coach Jenny Severns discussed the upcoming meet, "I think we're definitely ready. I think this is the most ready I've ever felt we've been since I've been here which is good, it's really exciting. I think training has been really, really well for everybody and they're all getting better at the right time, so we've definitely done everything that we can do to be the best that we can be. I think there is something to be said about knowing everyone is ready. Our goal is to do the best that we can do, we can't control anybody else. So as long as everybody goes out and gives their best, I know that we'll do well."
A season ago, the women's team finished fourth out of 12 teams with 94 points. Three of MSU's top five finishers from that meet return in Carolyne Tanui, Abbie Oliver and Brittany Bohn. Tanui was the 11th overall finisher last year in the championship meet and was named to the All-OVC team.
Murray State is coming off an impressive meet two weeks ago at the Bradley Invitational. Every Racer set a personal or season best time at the meet. Oliver and Tanui have the sixth and ninth best times in the OVC at a distance of 6K, recorded at Bradley.
Eastern Kentucky has won 26 of the previous 34 women's championships, including winning a season ago in Oxford, Ala.
Speaking about the conference, Severns said, "This conference is way better than it's ever been. You never know what's going to happen. I don't want to underestimate anybody because people can have breakout races and anything can happen."
Over on the men's side, the team is looking to improve upon its 11th place finish from a year ago. The team's leading scorer at last year's conference meet, Lucas Prather, returns for a team comprised of freshmen and sophomores.
Like the women, the men also had a great race at the Bradley Invitational - eight of the nine racers recorded a season or personal best at the meet.
Eastern Kentucky has won the most men's OVC Championships (21), including the last seven in a row and eight of the last nine. EKU also has had the individual champion in each of the last nine years.
Coach Severns also commented on the state of her teams, saying, "We have talked about the OVC meet in general a lot less this year than we have in the past and I think that it's been better for us. We're just kind of looking at it as another meet – just go in and take care of business. I think everyone is ready but they're not overthinking it, which is good. I think we've done that in the past kind of over thought it. This year I think mentally we definitely are where we need to be."
The OVC Athletes and Freshmen of the Year, which are determined by coaches vote, will be announced Friday and awarded along with the Coach of the Year, Athletes of the Championship and All-OVC honors following Saturday's Championship.
