The Murray State women's basketball team will kick-off a three game stay at The Bank Thursday when they face-off with Wright State for the first-time in program history.
Murray State suffered its first loss of the season Saturday when it fell at Western Kentucky, 86-63. While the Racers did not have a poor shooting afternoon, finishing at 31.3 percent, they ran into a buzzsaw-like Lady Topper offense that shot 43.6 percent. WKU also dominated the game in other facets, outscoring the Racers 48-8 in the paint and on 25-4 second-chance points.
MSU was able cut the lead to as few as six late in the first half, but that would be as close as the Racers would get and fell by 23. Jessica Winfrey and Keiona Kirby led Murray State in the game with 11 points each, while Winfrey was also her team's leading rebounder with eight.
Â
Jashae Lee had nine points and two rebounds in the loss at WKU, which earned her the second adidas® OVC Newcomer of the Week honor in as many weeks. Through three games, Lee is averaging 9.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game
Â
Thursday will be the first-ever meeting between the Raiders and the Racers. The Raiders will be the fourth current Horizon league team to play Murray State.
MSU is currently 7-6 all-time against Horizon League teams, with the bulk coming from former OVC member Youngstown, against whom the Racers are 5-5. Murray State is 2-0 against Illinois-Chicago, but fell in their last meeting with a Horizon team, 61-68 in overtime, when they faced off with Cleveland State as part of Ole Miss' Magnolia Classic in Oxford.
While the two teams have never met, the Racers are no stranger to WSU head coach Mike Bradbury, who led Morehead State for three seasons from 2007-10. Bradbury and Racer head coach Rob Cross faced off five times during his stint with the Eagles with Bradbury winning four of the five meetings.
Â
Wright State is currently 3-1 on the season and is coming off of a 90-80 win at home against Akron. The Raiders overcame a nine-point first-half deficit to lead by three at halftime and eventually win the game by 10. Wright State had four of its five starters score in double-digits in the contest with Ivory James and Tay'ler Mingo leading the way with 18 each. Tayler Stanton also had a big game as she notched her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 boards.
Kim Demmings and James currently lead Wright State by averaging 22.5 and 20.3 points, respectively. Mingo is also averaging double-digits at 12.5, while Stanton leads her team in rebounds with 12.0 to go along with 7.5 points per game. As a team, the Raiders are outscoring their opponents by 8.0 points per game and committing 12.3 less turnovers per game, despite being outshot 42.5 to 35.8 percent and being outrebounded by 10.2 boards per game.
