After a thrilling overtime victory over Eastern Kentucky, three Racers took home weekly honors from the Ohio Valley Conference. Linebacker Perry Cooper was named the defensive player of the week, punter Steven Mix was named specialist of the week and Maikhail Miller earned newcomer of the week honors.
Cooper earned his first career honor after leading the charge on the final play of the game as the Racers stopped the EKU quarterback on the one-yard line on fourth down. Cooper finished the day with 12 tackles, including six solo stops, and a pass break-up. The game-winning goaline stand was the second on the day for the Racer defense. They also stopped the Colonels inside the one-yard line in the first half.
Despite not having his best kicking day by average, Mix made on the biggest plays of the game early in the fourth quarter. Facing a fourth down from inside their own 20-yard line, Mix had his punt blocked. Instead of panicking, Mix scooped up the ball and rumbled 11 yards for the first down. The Racers would go on to kick a field goal to extend the lead to seven points.
Miller saved his best game of the season for last. After returning as the starting quarterback, Miller went 37-of-54 for 467 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 28 yards and a pair of scores. Both of his rushing touchdowns came in the first half as he scored from one and three yards out. He did his damage through the air in the second half as he went 19-of-30 for 318 yards after recess. He hit Jesse Blackburn on a two-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and then found Blackburn from 26 yards out in overtime. The 467 yards are the seventh most in a single game in MSU history.
