The Murray State Racers open their 89th season of collegiate basketball and the 2013-14 season Friday in Valparaiso, Ind., against the Valparaiso Crusaders. Tip time is 7:30 p.m. at VU's Athletics-Recreation Center. The Racer Radio Network will air the game on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. HorizonLeague.org has online streaming video.
The Racers are 32-10 in season openers in the modern era which began with the formation of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948 and have won 16 of 19 since 1994. This game marks just the fourth time since 1998 that MSU hasn't opened the season at home. In 1997 MSU won at Dayton 76-69 and in 2005, they lost a late lead and dropped a 79-75 overtime loss at Cincinnati. In 2009, MSU lost a neutral site opener at Saint Mary's (CA) to San Diego State on a half-court heave 87-84. The last time MSU opened on the road was in 2009 at California in a 75-70 loss to the Bears. MSU's last win on the road in a season opener was the win at Dayton in 1997. MSU is 6-9 in road openers since 1948.
The Racers used a 53-28 second half to score a 95-68 win over Freed-Hardeman in exhibition play last Saturday at home. Jarvis Williams led the way with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, while the Racers got 18 points from Jeffery Moss, 14 from Dexter Fields and 11 from Terron Gilmore. MSU put the game away with an 18-2 run that resulted in a 76-56 lead with 7:50 left.
With the departure of Racer Greats Isaiah Canaan and Ed Daniel, MSU must find a way to replace the duo that helped MSU to a record 106 wins in the last four seasons. Only an overtime loss to Belmont kept the Racers out of the NCAA Tournament as they posted their fourth straight 20-win season to tie the school record. MSU returns 23 percent of their scoring and 24 percent rebounding from last season led by lone senior Dexter Fields (6.5ppg & 2.5rpg).
Valparaiso has won two home exhibition games with a 69-60 win (Oct. 26) over Hillsdale and 90-82 over Robert Morris (Nov. 2). Jordan Coleman leads the Crusaders with 11.0ppg and 8.0rpg, while LaVonte Dority has scored 8.0ppg. Valpo is coming off the 2012-13 season in which they won a school-record 26 games and played in the NCAA Tournament. Valpo lost all five starters and six seniors from that team and return 22 percent of their scoring and 27 percent of their rebounding. The Racers have five newcomers playing in their first game as Racers at Valparaiso.
Head Coach Steve Prohm begins his third season with the Racers as he ranks high among accomplishments for any coach in NCAA D-I through their first two seasons. Prohm, the fastest MSU coach to 50 victories, joins Tevester Anderson as the only MSU coaches to win at least 20 games in their first two seasons. Prohm ranks 11th all-time among his NCAA D-I peers in making it to 50 wins in only 59 games. Additionally, he's eighth all-time with 52 wins in his first two seasons as head coach.
