In a back-and-forth game that saw a combined six errors, it was Murray State that did just enough to earn the victory and complete the sweep of Bowling Green with an 8-6 victory Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Breds (4-3) jumped out to a big early lead as they sent nine hitters to plate in the first inning. Ty Stetson started things with a single up the middle and went to third as a wild pitch on ball four to Dylan Wheeler put runners on second and third with one out. Mike Kozlowski drew a walk to load the bases before a costly error on a chopper to third scored a run and kept the bases loaded. Wheeler raced home on a passed ball before Dalton West cleared the bases with a double into the gap in right center.
The Falcons (2-4) took advantage of a fielding error to spark a two-out rally in the third. T.J. Losby started the rally with a single to right before a fielding error put runners on the corners. Jeremy Shay drove in the runner from third with a perfectly placed ball through the left side.
BGSU battled all the way back and took a one-run lead as they scored five runs in the fourth inning. The damage was again done with two outs as Andrew Kubuski beat out an infield single to drive in a run, before Losby plated two runs with a single to left center. After a wild pitch scored the fourth run, Shay drove in a run with a single through the right side.
MSU quickly regained the lead in the home-half of the inning as Greg Guest and Paul Ritzheimer singled with one out. Stetson drove in a run with a double to left field, before Brandon Elliott plated a run with a groundout to second.
The Breds added an insurance run in the seventh as Mathews singled to right and West doubled down to left field with one out. Greg Guest followed with an infield singled off the glove of a drawn-in shortstop to score Mathews.
The Falcons threatened again in the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with two outs. Reliever Andrew Bramley put an end to the threat by getting a comebacker to the mound to end the game.
Sheldon Baxter (1-1) got the victory after allowing three runs over 1.1 innings. Bramley (1) earned the save after striking out two and giving up two hits over four innings. Trevor Blaylock (0-2) took the loss after surrendering seven runs, six earned, on four hits and four walks over 3.1 innings.
West led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Stetson went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Mathews and Guest each collected a pair of hits.
The Breds return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to face #8 Kentucky. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
