Freshman French Paces Racers At Grover Page Classic

The Murray State men's golf team had a spot in fifth place after the first day of competition at the Grover Page Classic at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
Freshman Preston French posted a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Racers with a spot in fourth place in the field of 71 players as the Racers posted a 304 to trail fourth place Union (TN) by two shots and first place Lipscomb by 12 shots.
MSU's Patrick Newcomb was in ninth place with a 74, while Hunter York carded a 77 for a spot in 27th place. MSU's first round was rounded out with an 80 by Brock Simmons for a spot in 46th place and an 83 from Tyler Brown for spot in 59th place.
First place Lipscomb (292) was followed by UT Martin (297), UT Martin B-Team (299), Union (302) and Murray State (304) making up the top-5. The rest of the field included: Southern Illinois (306), Tennessee Tech (309), Morehead State (319), Tennessee State (313), John A. Logan (318), Trevecca Nazarene (323), Jackson State (326) and Bethel (TN) 331.
MSU has two individuals playing the event this week with Duncan McCormick in 16th place with a 75 and Jared Gosser in 27th place with a 77.
The second round was being played Monday afternoon with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Hosted by UT Martin, the Grover Page Classic is a 54-hole stroke play tournament with 13 teams, including five Ohio Valley Conference members.
The Jackson Country Club is playing at a length of 6,783 yards and to a par of 72.
