Murray State women's golfer Delaney Howson won medalist honors at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate played at the Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn., while the Racers came home with a second-place finish.
Howson fired rounds of 75-74=149 which was good for a one-shot win over Tennessee Tech's Madalyn Everts who had scores of 76-74=150.
The Racers took second in the 12-team field with scores of 314-310=624, while TTU came from one shot down at the start of the final round to take the title with scores of 315-307=622. Lee (629) was in third with Newberry (632), Southern Illinois (634) and Eastern Kentucky (636) rounding out the top-6.
MSU's Alli Weaver made the All-Tournament Team with a fifth place showing with scores of 75-80=155. Abbi Stamper placed 12th with rounds of 81-77=158, while Sophie Hillier was in 31st place with rounds of 83-79=162. Alexandra Lennartsson withdrew from the event for the second round because of illness after carding an 83 in the first round.
Howson, a junior from Newmarket, Ontario, wins for the second time at Murray State and is the 32nd medalist under head coach Velvet Milkman in her 20 seasons at MSU. Howson won the Time Warner Racer Classic, MSU's home event on March 5 and she's the seventh to win multiple events at MSU.
“I'm very happy for Delaney because winning back-to-back events is very impressive,” Milkman said. “She has worked very hard and it's paying off for her. I'm very happy with our Team's effort in the tournament. We only had four players in the final round because Alexandra wasn't feeling well. But everyone stepped up to the challenge and competed extremely well, so this is something we can build on.”
Seventh place Belmont (637), Austin Peay (650), Presbyterian (660), Evansville (663), Northern Kentucky (675) and Northern Iowa (679) made up the rest of the field.
The tournament hosted by Tennessee Tech, was played at the Highlands Course at Sevierville GC to a distance of 5,802 yards and to a par of 71.
The event was held in honor of the late Bobby Nichols who first coached the TTU men's golf program in the late 1970's and started the TTU women's program in 1986. Bobby Nichols, who died in 2008 from cancer at the age of 66, is in both the TTU and Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame.
The Racers return to action (March 25-26) in Stockbridge, Ga., for the 54-hole John Kirk-Panther Intercollegiate. Hosted by Georgia State, play will be conducted at Eagle's Landing Golf Club.
