MSU Wins Rain Shortened Time Warner Racer Classic

The Murray State women's golf team won the Time Warner Racer Classic Tuesday after the final 18 holes of the 36-hole event was cancelled because of heavy rain and high winds at MSU's home course, Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.
The field of seven teams and 43 competitors started the final round at 9 a.m., but by 12:15 p.m., the weather made the course unplayable and the round was cancelled.
Using round one scores, the Racers took the title with a Monday 312. MSU had a nine-shot win over runner-up Lipscomb (321), with Austin Peay (324), Eastern Kentucky (325) and Belmont (326) rounding out the top five.
MSU's Delaney Howson won medalist honors with an even-par 72 in round one, just ahead of teammate Alexandra Lennartsson and Janet Steen of Belmont who each had a 76.
Howson had an eagle on the par-4 5th hole Monday that led to her low score. She becomes the 31st medalist in the 20-year history of women's golf at MSU, all under Head Coach Velvet Milkman who has now coached the Racers to 34 tournament wins.
"I'm happy with the way our team played and came out to a good start," Milkman said. "Congratulations to Delaney on her win because that was a very good round yesterday in difficult conditions. We all wanted better weather for our home spring tournament and we tried to get the final round in, but the weather wouldn't allow it."
MSU's Alli Weaver had a spot in 11th place with an 81, while Sophie Hiller and Abbi Stamper shared 20th place each with an 83. Gina Nuzzo carded an 87 playing the Racer Classic as an individual for the Racers and was in 32nd place.
Drury and Tennessee State rounded out the field with a 337 and a 385.
The Racers' next event is the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate (March 18-19) at the Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn.
