Newcomb Takes Third At Big Blue Intercollegiate

Patrick Newcomb came up just short in his quest for his fourth victory of the 2012-13 season, but fired three straight under-par rounds to take third place at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate at Hermitage Golf Club in Old Hickory, Tenn.
Newcomb had the lowest score of the 54-hole event in round one with a 6-under-par 66 and followed with solid rounds of 71 and 70 for a 207 total to take third and make the All-Tournament Team.
His 66 is tied for lowest round of the season in the Ohio Valley Conference with teammate Hunter York and Tyler Shellnut (UT Martin) and Mitch Thomas (Tennessee Tech.)
Newcomb, one of the favorites for OVC Golfer of the Year (He won it in 2012) is leading the league in scoring average at 71.3 strokes per round. The senior from Benton, Ky., was 33rd in the nation as the week started in NCAA Division-I.
The Racers were two shots off the lead heading into the final round but a 298 sent them to an eighth place finish after they put up scores of 285 and 284 in the first two rounds. MSU's final 867 was just behind seventh place Morehead State at 866 and sixth place Belmont at 865.
Southern Illinois managed to hang on to the lead with a final round 280 for an 847 total, ahead of runner-up Lipscomb at 852. The rest of the top five teams included: SIUE (853), UT Martin (856) and Tennessee Tech (863). After the Racers, the lower part of the 14-team field was made up by: Tennessee State, Alabama State and South Dakota who shared ninth place at 869, IPFW (897), Travecca Nazarene (901) and Eastern Illinois (922).
Murray State's Jared Gosser placed 43rd with scores of 74-70-76=220, while Hunter York and Tyler Brown shared 53rd place. York had scores of 72-72-78=222, while Brown had scores of 75-71-76=222. Preston French placed 65th with rounds of 73-76-76=225.
Wade Thompson placed 38th as an individual for the Racers with rounds of 76-70-73=219.
Jake Erickson of SIU was the medalist with a score of 206.
The Racers now prepare for the OVC Championship (April 25-27) at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.
