Racers Ready For OVC Women's Golf Championship

The Murray State Racers begin play in the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference women's golf championships Sunday at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn. The 54-hole event runs through Tuesday.
Saturday is practice day for the teams with the Racers starting at 12:20 p.m.
When the 54-hole championship ends Tuesday, the winner will represent the OVC in the NCAA Women's Golf Tournament.
The OVC Championship field also includes: Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, SIUE, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
In round one, the Racers will be paired with Jacksonville State and Morehead State starting at 10:30 a.m. with Sophie Hillier teeing off. MSU follows with Abbi Stamper at 10:40 a.m., Alexandra Lennartsson at 10:50 a.m., Alli Weaver at 11 a.m. and Delaney Howson at 11:10 a.m.
The pairing of the Racers, Gamecocks and Eagles represents the last 11 OVC champions. The last team other than these three to win was Tennessee Tech in 2001.
MSU carded a 928 in 2012 and finished third, after posting a 902 in 2011 to finish second. Morehead State was the 2011 winner, while Jacksonville State won the OVC title last season.
The Racers enter the OVC showdown with the second-best average this season at 312.7, behind leader Morehead State at 303.8.
MSU has two of the top-5 players in overall scoring. Delaney Howson (Newmarket, Ontario) is third at 76.1, while Alexandra Lennartsson is fifth at 76.7. MSU's Alli Weaver (Lititz, Pa.) is 13th at 78.6. MSU's pair of freshmen, Abbi Stamper (Frankfort, Ky.) and Sophie Hillier (Sandy, England) has scoring averages of 80.5 and 83.6.
The Racers lead the OVC with eight all-time championships in the 19 that have been played since 1994, but are looking to return to the top for the first time since 2010 which marked an end to a string of three straight titles. MSU has five individual titles with Nikki Orazine taking medalist honors in 2004.
The 2013 staging of the OVC Championship marks the fourth straight year the event has been hosted by Greystone GC. The par-72 course will play about 6,000 yards.
Opened in 1998, Greystone was designed by PGA Tour pro Mark McCumber and has hosted numerous high profile events including PGA Tour qualifying, Senior PGA Tour qualifying and the Tennessee State Open.
