The Murray State Racers begin play in the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Men's golf championships Thursday at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn. The 54-hole event runs through Saturday where the OVC champion earns a spot in the NCAA Men's Golf Tournament.
The OVC Championship field is the largest in the history of the league with the recent addition of SIUE and Belmont. The Racers will also be joined in the event by Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
The Racers look to Patrick Newcomb to lead the way this week. The senior from Benton, Ky., is one of the favorites to be OVC Golfer of the Year after he won the award in 2012. Newcomb leads the OVC in stroke average at 71.3, which ranks him 13th in NCAA Division-I. He has posted two wins this season and has finished in the top-6 five times.
The rest of Murray State's starting five includes senior Hunter York (Hardin, Ky.) who ranks eighth in the OVC with a 73.3 scoring average, while freshman Preston French (Lexington, Ky.) ranks 20th at 74.9. MSU's team also includes senior Tyler Brown (Blue Springs, Mo.) who has a 75.5 average and freshman Jared Gosser (Russell Springs, Mo.) who earned the fifth spot in the lineup in the last two events of the season. His scoring average is 76.2 strokes per round.
MSU has won the OVC title four times since their last in 2010 (also at Greystone) and they'll be looking to add to the other titles they won in 1971, 1987 and 1991.
Jacksonville State enters the event having won the last two OVC titles and if history holds, the final on Saturday will be a close one. The OVC Championship has been decided by a single stroke six times including the titles in 2009 and 2012. MSU carded an 866 in 2012 and finished third only five shots off the lead.
The Racers enter the OVC showdown with the second-best average in the OVC at 293.6 strokes per round, behind leader Austin Peay at 292.8. UT Martin is third at 296.5 and Jacksonville State is fourth at 297.0.
The 2013 OVC Championship marks the fourth straight year the event has been hosted by Greystone GC. The par-72 course will play 6,858 yards.
Opened in 1998, Greystone was designed by PGA Tour pro Mark McCumber and has hosted numerous high profile events including PGA Tour qualifying, Senior PGA Tour qualifying and the Tennessee State Open.
