The Murray State Racers came home with a third place finish and Alexandra Lennartsson and Delaney Howson earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the Ohio Valley Conference women's golf championships in Dickson, Tenn.
The Racers carded their best score of the 54-hole event with a final round 299 after scores of 312 and 309 in the first two days. Their 920 total was ahead of fourth place Morehead State at 921 and fifth place Austin Peay at 938.
When all the scores were tallied the Racers nearly made an amazing comeback, but finished four shots off the lead.
Lennartsson, a senior from Nykoping, Sweden, played some great golf for the Racers over the three days and finished third with scores of 76-74-76=226. Delaney Howson, a junior from Newmarket, Ontario, placed fifth in the field of 50 players with scores of 76-78-74=228.
Lennartsson and Howson become the 19th and 20th MSU players to earn OVC All-Tournament honors as the Racers now have eight straight years of having a player make the all-tournament team. This also marks the first time since 2010 that the Racers have placed two players on the all-tournament team. In 2010, Megan McKinney and Joyce Trus earned a spot on the team.
Alli Weaver, a senior from Lititz, Pa., had a spot in 15th place with rounds of 75-80-77=232.
MSU's pair of freshmen gave a good accounting in their first appearance in the OVC season-ending event as well. Abbi Stamper (Frankfort, Ky.) carded the Racers' low score of the tournament with a final round 72. Coupled with her scores of 86-80 in the first two rounds, Stamper had a 238 total for a spot in 22nd place. Sophie Hillier (Sandy, England) placed 30th with scores of 85-77-82=244.
Sadness accompanies the end any season when the seniors have hit their final shots, and that's the case for Lennartsson and Weaver.
“I'm very proud of our seniors, they did an outstanding job during their careers at Murray State,” MSU Head Coach Velvet Milkman said. “I know they're going to go on and do great things with their lives.”
“My time at Murray State has been amazing,” Lennartsson said. “Velvet and Chris are amazing coaches, my teammates are friends for a lifetime.”
“These years at Murray State are ones that I'll never forget,” Weaver said. “I had so much fun playing college golf here.”
Eastern Kentucky was the champions with scores of 308-300-308=916 to win the OVC by one shot over Jacksonville State who finished with rounds of 305-310-302=917.
Greystone GC hosted the OVC Championship for the fourth straight year in 2013 and the course played 5,964 yards and to a par of 72.
The men's portion of the OVC Championship starts Thursday and runs through Saturday also at Greystone.
