Newcomb Shares Lead - Racers 5th At OVC Men's Golf Championship

Murray State's Patrick Newcomb had a share of the lead and the Racers were in fifth place after the first day of competition at the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Men's golf championships Thursday at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.
Newcomb had a chip-in eagle on the par-5 17th to spur him to a 3-under-par 69 to get a share of first place with UT Martin's Brendon Caballero. Newcomb made par on the first five holes at Greystone and birdied the par-3 6th hole to make the turn with a 1-under 35. After a bogey at the 10th, Newcomb made birdies at the 11th and 14th and made eagle the 17 which erased a bogey at the 16th.
Jared Gosser had a share of third place with a 2-under-par 70 in the field of 55 players. Playing in his first OVC Championship, Gosser also made the turn 1-under and after a bogey at the 12th; he made birdies at the 13th and 15th coming home.
MSU's Tyler Brown carded a 76 and was in 35th place, while Hunter York was in 47th place with a 79. Preston French had a spot in 51st place after an 81.
The Racers put up a team score of 294 in round one and were 10 shots off the lead of Austin Peay at 284. Belmont was in second with an even par 288, while Jacksonville State had third place with a 289 and Morehead State was in fourth at 292. After the Racers in fifth place, Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech had a share of sixth place at 295, while Tennessee State was in seventh at 297. The rest of the OVC field was rounded out by SIUE at 302 and Eastern Illinois and UT Martin both at 305.
Friday's round two will see the Racers paired with Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. French will be the first off at 9:40 a.m., with York following at 9:50 a.m. and Brown at 10 a.m. Gosser gets his second round going at 10:10 a.m., with Newcomb anchoring the Racer lineup at 10:20 a.m.
The 2013 OVC Championship marks the fourth straight year the event has been hosted by Greystone GC. The par-72 course is playing 6,858 yards.
