Murray State's Patrick Newcomb will carry the lead into the final round of the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Men's golf championships Saturday at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.
Newcomb fired a 2-under-par 70 Friday in round two and coupled with a first round 69 he recorded Thursday, his 139 total was one shot ahead of UT Martin's Brendon Caballero who had scores of 69-71=140. Newcomb was two shots clear of a group of five players sharing third place with a score of 141.
Newcomb's round started with four straight pars before his first of five birdies on the day at the par-4 5th hole. He made bogey at the 7th, but birdied the 9th to make the turn with a 1-under-par 35 as he did in round one. After making birdie at the par-3 11th, Newcomb had to take a penalty stroke when his drive on the par-5 12th went right. The resulting double-bogey dropped him back to even par. But Newcomb made all pars and two birdies at the 14th and 17th to finish with a 70.
Newcomb is 14 players under par after 36 holes at Greystone.
MSU's last OVC individual champion was Patrick Newcomb's Brother, Nick, who won the title also at Greystone in 2010 which was also a team title for the Racers. Nick also won the title in 2008.
MSU's pair of starting freshmen has played well in each round of the OVC Championship starting with Jared Gosser who had a 70 in round one.
Preston French took his turn and went low in round two firing a 4-under-par 68 which tied for the low score of the tournament with Adam Cunningham of Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State's James Stepp. Like Newcomb, French made the turn with a 35 after he made birdies at the 2nd and 5th to off-set a bogey at the 7th hole. His back-nine was flawless with four straight pars and then back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th and another at the 17th coming in.
French, who was named to the OVC Newcomer Team, has rounds of 81-68=149 for a spot in 29th place in the field of 55 players.
The rest of the Racers' team was rounded out by Gosser who was in 29th place with scores of 70-79=149, while Tyler Brown had a spot in 44th place with scores of 76-77=153. Hunter York was in 47th place with rounds of 79-75=154.
The Racers were right where they were after the first round and not able to improve their fifth place standing. MSU had scores of 294-290=584 and trailed leader Austin Peay who carded rounds of 284-284=568 to lead Jacksonville State by nine shots heading into the final round. JSU had scores of 289-288=577, while Tennessee Tech and Belmont had third and fourth place with rounds of 295-286=581 and 288-294=582.
Eastern Kentucky was in sixth place at 586 and the rest of the field included: Morehead State (587), Tennessee State (587), SIUE (592), UT Martin (597) and Eastern Illinois (609).
