Racers Offense Continues to Make Strides in Spring

The installation process continued Wednesday afternoon as the Murray State football team went through their sixth practice of the spring on the turf at Stewart Stadium.
“We had a lot better intensity than we had on Monday, and that was good to see,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “We are not playing as fast as I would like to physically, as well as mentally. A lot of new stuff was installed today, which slowed us up a little bit, but I really like how the offense is coming along.”
The biggest hole the offense faces this season is replacing All-America quarterback Casey Brockman. Sophomore KD Humphries is the frontrunner to take over the duties, but is being pushed by juniors Parks Frazier and CJ Bennett.
“I think a little bit of it with our quarterbacks is some of them are still learning and feeling their way around,” said Hatcher. “CJ does some good things and then it shows that he doesn't have the experience in this offense, but that is what spring is for. I was really pleased with Parks on the scout team last year. He seems to be getting better everyday, as well as KD. Right now, KD is a solid number one, but things can change.”
The Racers backfield will be strong again with returning seniors Jaamal Berry and Duane Brady. Illness has left the Racers shorthanded during spring drills as Berry and redshirt freshman Marcus Holliday have missed time. Redshirt freshman Bob Fields has gotten extended reps, while Spencer Phillips worked as a running back on Wednesday. Phillips has become the utility guy on offense as he has seen time at quarterback, wide receiver and now running back this spring.
The Racers will return to practice two more times this week. They will take the field at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, and then return Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Saturday's practice will include scrimmage-like situations. All practices are open to the public.
