Comeback Falls Short in 5-4 Loss

Murray State put forth a valiant comeback, only to come up one run shy in fall 5-4 to Belmont Saturday afternoon at Rose Park in Nashville, Tenn.

The Breds (20-30, 8-18 OVC) trailed 5-2 heading into the seventh inning before they loaded the bases with no outs. Rick Linton started the inning with a walk, Paul Ritzheimer beat out a bunt single and Ty Stetson singled to left center. Brandon Elliott drove in one run with a sacrifice fly to right field, and Brandon Eggenschwiler followed with a sacrifice fly to right center. Mike Kozlowski followed with a double to left field, but the Bruins went to the bullpen and got out of the inning with a groundout to third.

The Bruins (35-15, 20-6 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as a pair of singles put runners on the corners, and Jared Breen scored on a wild pitch. BU added a run in the second on a Breen RBI single to center field.

MSU tied the game in the fourth inning as Kozlowski doubled into the right-field corner and scored on Dalton West's single through the right side. West made his way to third on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Wheeler, and scored as Rick Linton beat out an infield single to short.

BU got the runs they needed in the fifth inning as Breen hit a solo shot to left center, and Matt Beaty followed with a two-run shot to right center.

Cashtyn DeLeeuw (3-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts over five innings. Cody Maerz came out of the bullpen and did not allow a hit in three shutout innings.

Dan Ludwig (11-1) picked up the victory after allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits, two walks and seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Josh Davis (12) picked up the save, allowing one hit and striking out one, over two shutout innings.

Stetson, Kozlowski and West each had two hits as the Breds outhit BU 10-8.

The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
