The Murray State softball team's season came to an end on Sunday as they fell in the third-place game of the OVC Tournament, 5-4, at Williams Field in Charleston, Ill.
The Racers started the game like a house on fire, with leadoff hits from Shelbey Miller, Mo Ramsey and Alexa Becker. Miller scored the first run after a UT Martin error following a successful stolen base attempt. Ellyn Troup tacked on another run for Murray State in the next at-bat with a successful sacrifice bunt that scored Ramsey.
However, in the bottom of the inning Kenzi Tate gave the Skyhawks a 3-2 lead by belting her 13th home run of the season. She would later add another run in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly that scored Kayla Wade.
In the fourth, Sarah Anderson knotted the game at four with by belting a two-run blast that sailed just over the wall down the left field line. In the bottom of the inning, Lauren Smith put UT Martin back on top by taking the first pitch saw yard to make it 5-4.
In the top of the fifth, Shelbey Miller tripled to left field and looked as if she would tie the game after UT Martin appeared to throw the ball into the dugout. However, a fortuitous bounce off of the dugout allowed the Skyhawk pitcher to make the throw to home in time for the out.
The Racers got hits from Christian Cox and Troup in the bottom two innings, but were unable to score and fell 5-4 to end their 2013 campaign. This marks the second consecutive season that the Racers have finished third at the OVC Tournament, the best finish in school history.
Miller and Cox each ended the day with two hits, while Ramsey, Becker, Anderson and Troup each had one. CheyAnne Gaskey (13-9) took the loss for the Racers, throwing three innings and allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout. Shelby Kosmecki ended her MSU career by allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts in the first three innings.
The Racers will end the 2013 season at 25-28 overall. They finished fourth in the league in the regular-season and won two games at the OVC Tournament for the second year in a row.
