NCAA Release I Blessings GC I Newcomb Notes I Live Stats
Murray State's Patrick Newcomb is ready to compete in the NCAA Men's Golf Championship starting Thursday in regional play at The Blesssings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Newcomb begins play from the first tee at 9:20 a.m. Thursday. The 54-hole event runs through Saturday.
“I've had a good spring and my putting has been especially good,” Newcomb said. “I'm just going to continue to practice leading up to the event and be sharp. I'm very excited to have the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Championship and represent Murray State.”
Part of his preparation was playing qualifier for the US Open.
Newcomb shot a 72 Monday at Illini Country Club in Springfield, Ill., and just missed what would've been a seven-way playoff with a group of players who shot 71. There were 70 competitors for four spots in Springfield. Newcomb's near miss helped him in that he had another competitive situation between winning the OVC Championship and the NCAA's.
Newcomb's career at Murray State has been impressive on many levels after he followed his brother Nick to the Racers program. Nick had a great career in his own right with an OVC MVP award and two conference medalist titles.
The Newcomb brothers were teammates in 2010 (Nick was a senior and Patrick a freshman) and helped the Racers to their first OVC team title in 19 years and the younger brother has been the face of Eddie Hunt's team ever since.
“He's just a person you can always count on to be a leader and to have himself ready to play,” said Hunt, who just finished his 12th season at the helm of the Racer Golf program. “Patrick wanted to come to Murray to play with his brother and they had a championship together and since then Patrick has won two MVP's on his own. He's had a great career and it's only fitting that it ends with him playing in the NCAA's.”
The NCAA Men's Golf Championship is primarily a team competition, but there is room for outstanding individuals like the Racer senior. To advance to the NCAA finals from Fayetteville, Newcomb must be the low player not on the top-5 teams that will advance. The NCAA finals will get a combined 30 teams and six individuals not on those teams (May 28-June 2) at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga.
“I'm happy to be playing in the NCAA's” Newcomb said. “This is something that I've worked for during my time at Murray State and now I want to go and do my best.”
