Murray State used a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings, but it was Eastern Kentucky that dealt the final blow as the Colonels scored two runs in the 10th inning to escape Reagan Field with a 9-7 victory Friday afternoon. The loss dropped the Breds to 0-8 in extra-innings on the season.
The Colonels (20-31, 16-12 OVC) started the 10th inning with a single through the right side by Austin Grisham. A failed pickoff attempt moved the runner to third, and Luke Wurzelbacher delivered an RBI double to left field. Two batters later, Kyle Nowlin added an insurance run with a double to right center.
The Breds (20-33, 8-21 OVC) forced extra innings by taking advantage of a fielding error to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Brandon Eggenschwiler led off the inning with a double to right center. Dylan Wheeler drew a one-out walk before Dalton West's grounder to first went through the legs of the first baseman, scoring Eggenschwiler. Greg Guest tied the game with a sacrifice bunt, scoring Wheeler from third.
EKU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on an Alex Hughes three-run home run to right in the third inning. The Breds got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a Ty Stetson run-scoring single up the middle.
MSU tied the game in fifth as Taylor Mathews singled through the left side and went to third on Stetson's double to left field. Brandon Elliott drove in both runners with a single through the left side.
Both teams pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth inning to make the score 5-5. EKU got RBI base hits from Wurzelbacher and Nowlin, and the Breds got a two-run single off the bat of Paul Ritzheimer.
The Colonels regained the lead in the top of the ninth as Shaun Ball delivered an RBI single to right field. A second run scored on the play as the throw to third hit the runner in the back, allowing him to score on the error.
Cameron Wallace (1-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits and three strikeouts over 1.2 innings. Cody Creamer (2-1) picked up the victory after striking out one in 1.2 innings of hitless relief.
Ritzheimer led the offense by going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Stetson, Eggenschwiler and Mathews each added a pair of hits.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The Breds will honor nine seniors playing in their final game in an MSU uniform in a pregame ceremony.
