Three Breds Earn Postseason OVC Honors

2013 All-Ohio Valley Conference Team
A trio of Murray State baseball players were honored by the Ohio Valley Conference Tuesday evening as the league announced its 2013 postseason awards. Junior designated hitter Brandon Eggenschwiler was selected to the second team, while Cody Maerz and Taylor Mathews were selected to the All-Freshman team. The all-conference teams are selected by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Eggenschwiler (Lexington, Ky.) earned postseason accolades for the second-straight season after being named to the first team a season ago. He finished the season with a team-best .340 average, 13 doubles, one home run and 40 RBIs. He also drew 32 walks and scored 34 runs. Eggenschwiler led the team with 24 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games. In the middle game against Canisius, Eggenschwiler went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and four RBIs. He posted a season-high four hits and scored three runs in a victory over UT Martin.
Maerz (Louisville, Ky.) was selected to the all-freshman team after going 3-2 with a 3.81 ERA in 17 appearances, seven starts. He allowed 62 hits and struck out 29 over 52 innings. He earned his first collegiate victory in his second career start against Northern Illinois, by allowing just one hit and striking out a career-best seven over five shutout innings. Maerz also threw five shutout innings to earn a victory over Alabama A&M. He closed out the season by throwing the final 1.1 innings to earn the victory over Eastern Kentucky in the season finale.
Mathews (Collierville, Tenn.) made 46 starts in his first season, hitting .273 with four doubles, one triple and 22 RBIs. He collected 50 hits and scored 36 runs. Mathews saw his first action in the opening weekend against Central Arkansas and went 5-for-9 with an RBI over two games. In his second career game, he went 4-for-6 with a double and an RBI against the Bears. He drove in a season-high four runs against SIU Edwardsville, including a bases-clearing double in the ninth inning.
The Breds finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 21-33, and a 9-21 mark in conference play.
