Murray State seniors Jaamal Berry and Walter Powell were selected to the 2013 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference Team released Monday at the annual Football Media Day in Nashville, Tenn. Berry was selected as a running back, while Powell was honored as a wide receiver and return specialist.
The Racers were picked to finish in a tie for sixth in the preseason predicted order of finish, voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Defending champion Eastern Illinois was picked to win the league against this season.
Berry (Miami, Fla.) was honored after rushing 95 times for 675 yards and seven touchdowns in his first season as a Racer. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry and collected a pair of 100-yard rushing games. He also added 29 receptions for 234 yards and a touchdown.
In his first game, Berry ran for 41 yards and caught four passes for 44 yards, including the game-winning 18-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to defeat Missouri State. He had his first 100-yard game against Tennessee Tech as he rushed 13 times for 142 yards and a touchdown. His best performance of the season came against Tennessee State, where he rushed 16 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns.
Berry is ranked at the No. 10 running back in the FCS this season, according to Phil Steele.
Powell (St. Louis, Mo.) is one of the most dynamic athletes in the FCS and is coming off a season in which he wrote the record books as a wide receiver and punt returner. He is rated as the top punt returner and all-purpose athlete in the FCS, while ranking as the fourth-best wide receiver, according to Phil Steele.
As a receiver, Powell set new school records for receptions and yards, as he hauled in 94 catches for 1,213 yards and 10 touchdowns. He set a school record with six 100-yard receiving performances, and caught at least one touchdown in six of the final seven games.
In the return game, he averaged 15.8 yards on 19 punt returns, and 26.3 yards on 23 kickoff returns. He tied the school record by returning two punts for a touchdown on the season, including an FCS-record 100-yard return against Southeast Missouri.
Powell finished the 2012 season by ranking second in the FCS in all-purpose yards, averaging 193.0 per game. He had at least 200 all-purpose yards in six games, including amassing 302 all-purpose yards in the season finale against Southeast Missouri. He had four catches for 51 yards and touchdown, while adding 134 yards on three kickoff returns and 117 yards on a pair of punt returns. He got off to a fast start as he returned his first kickoff 83 yards to set up the Racers first touchdown, and later had the record-setting punt return.
The Racers open the 2013 season Aug. 31 as they travel to face Missouri. Kickoff time is still yet to be determined.
