OVC Honors 98 MSU Student-Athletes For Academic Excellence

The Murray State rifle team and 98 student-athletes have been honored by the Ohio Valley Conference for their academic performance during the 2012-13 academic year, the league announced on Thursday. This season, 20 Murray State student-athletes received the OVC Medal of Honor, up eight from 2011-12, and 98 received the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards are presented annually in each conference-sponsored sport to the member institution's team with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher. This marks the third time in the past six seasons that the Racer rifle team has won the award and the first since 2009-10.
In total, 209 Ohio Valley Conference student-athletes received the Medal of Honor for the 2012-13 season. The Medal of Honor is given annually to the student-athlete who achieves the highest grade point average in a conference-sponsored sport. The 209 honorees are the most in the history of the award, surpassing the record of 178 set last year. It marks the fifth year in a row a new record has been set. Every Medal of Honor recipient carried a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the year.
This year's Medal of Honor winners from Murray State were Greg Guest and Paul Ritzheimer (baseball), Jordan Althoff and Jarred Koerner (men's cross country), Bridget Stichnot (women's cross country/track and field), Christian Duncan and Brock Rydecki (football), Tyler Brown and Jordan Smith (men's golf), Sophie Hillier and Delaney Howson (women's golf), Tessa Howald (rifle), Kayla Harbin, Sonja Murphy, Veronika Pribyslavska and Shauna Wicker (soccer), Leslie Bridges, Erica Howard and Shelby Kosmecki (softball) and Wendi Zickfield (volleyball).
The OVC also announced that 1,224 student-athletes were named to the 2012-13 OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll, also setting a new record. The 1,224 student-athletes surpassed the old record of 1,063 set a season ago. To be listed, recipients must have achieved at least a 3.25 grade point average and have been eligible and on the team throughout the competitive season in their chosen NCAA-sponsored sport(s) and used a season of competition. At least one student-athlete from each of the 15 MSU varsity sports was honored with the distinction this season.
