The Murray State women's soccer team won its first scrimmage of the 2013 season on Saturday by topping Chattanooga, 3-1, at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga.
The Mocs took an early lead in the match when freshman Monica Speth snuck one past freshman goalkeeper Savannah Haberman from 18-yards out to make it 1-0. However, in the 18th minute, Tasha Merritt fired a free kick that led to own goal by Chattanooga on an errant header by a Moc defender to tie the game at one.
Just a minute into the second period, freshman Lindey Hunt found junior Julie Mooney who was able to dribble through seven Mocs and smash the ball into the top left corner to give MSU a 2-1 lead. Just minutes later, freshman Lauren Frazier made it 3-1 when she scored on a through ball from junior Bronagh Kerins.
The Mocs had a chance to pull within one late in the game when they were awarded a penalty kick on a foul by the Racers. However, Haberman was able to atone for the early goal and block the penalty to keep the score at 3-1 until full time.
After the game, head coach Beth Acreman talked about the win. "When we first came out we had a bit of opening game jitters," said Acreman. "However, as the game went on we calmed down and got into the flow of the game better. Once we calmed down, our forwards saw the ball more, which allowed us to be more dangerous up front. It was a great team effort and we were able to get everyone minutes. It was great to see us win as a complete unit."
Despite the success on Saturday, Acreman knows the work is far from over. "There are still some things we need to work on before the next exhibition on Tuesday. But we are excited to get back to Cutchin Field and our great fans."
On Tuesday, the Racers will close out the preseason when they return to Cutchin Field to host Division II Southern Indiana. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
