Tennis Opens Fall at Southern Championships

Tournament Results
Men's tennis took to the court for the first time this fall in Athens, Ga. for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia. Coach Mel Purcell took four returning student-athletes to the tournament hoping to face strong competition early in the season.

The field was divided into three groups, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles and No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Adam Taylor played at No. I singles for Murray State. He took on Erik Moberg of Georgia-Gwinett in the opening round. Moberg got the better of Taylor in a pair of close sets, squeeking out victories of 7-5 and 6-4. He then took on Leo Vivas of Barry in the consolation bracket and again put forth a strong effort, but was defeated in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Max McLean took on David Biosca of East Tennessee State in the opening round of No. II singles. McLean fell 6-1, 6-0. In the consolation round, McLean picked up a set win, but Gagan Jain of Tennessee Tech took the match 6-3, 1-6, 1-0.

Taylor and McLean also teamed up for No. I doubles, but couldn't pull out a victory over Sean Karl and Markus Kerner of Tennessee, falling in the opening round 8-4.

Both Nicholas Mitric and Aleks Mitric competed at No. II singles. Nicholas dropped his match 6-1, 6-2 to Riaan Du Toit of Central Florida and Aleks fell to Yuta Hirokawa of Winthrop 6-1, 6-4.

Nicholas and Aleks also teamed up where they earned a bye to the round of 32 at No. 2 doubles. They were stymied by the team of Tony Kostadinov and Evgeny Silitski of Georgia-Gwinnett, 8-2.

Murray State will take the next two weeks off and return to action at the Paducah Sun Open (Oct. 4-5).
