In their first action of the season Murray State women's tennis received plenty of positive results at the Austin Peay Open. Andrea Eskauriatza took home the Flight "A" title and Verginie and Eleonore Tchakarova were victorious in doubles competition. The Racers were represented in the final round of each draw, winning four of the possible six.
Three other OVC schools competed in the open in addition to Murray State and nonconference rival Western Kentucky. Following the tournament Coach Elkin said, "I'm very proud of the way we competed. We faced some tough competition and it was good to see ourselves against the conference opponents."
Eskauriatza, who received a bye into the quarterfinals last night, defeated Ornella Di Salvo of Austin Peay 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinal round before defeating Ivon Simic of UT Martin in three sets 6-2, 0-6, 10-2.
Carla Suga won the combined "A" and "B" back draw flights, defeating Sarah Candeloro of UT Martin 8-3. Suga was defeated by Flight "A" runner-up Simic (6-1, 6-2) in the opening round.
Both Megan Blue and Eleonore Tchakarova advanced to the semifinal round of Flight "B". Tchakarova defeated Carolina Barboza of Western Kentucky (6-1, 6-1) to advance to the finals, before losing in a highly competitive match in a third-set-tiebreaker to Burcu Tari of UT Martin (6-4, 4-6, 10-7), who also defeated Blue in the semifinal round.
In Flight "C", Verginie Tchakarova also lost in a third-set-tiebreaker in the championship round. She fell to Annisa Warasanti of Southeast Missouri (6-3, 0-6, 10-6), who defeated Erin Patton in the first round.
Patton and Suzaan Stoltz both advanced to the back draw finals in Flight "C" and will play that match here at Murray State this week.
The doubles teams of Verginie and Eleonore Tchakarova, Blue and Patton and Suga and Eskauriatza all advanced to the semifinal round in the 15-team doubles flight. The Tchakarova's represented the Racers in the finals where they defeated Simic and Tari of UT Martin, 6-3 to win the title.
Murray State will be back in action next weekend at the Steve Baras Fall Classic hosted by Tennessee-Chattanooga.
