The Murray State softball team turned in the third highest GPA in all of Division I softball for the 2012-13 academic year, according to the annual rankings released by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association last week. The Racers posted a team GPA of 3.569, beating out the previous season's winner, Robert Morris, by just eight one-thousandths of a point.
This marks the first-time in the four-year history of Racer softball that the team has appeared in the NFCA Division I Top 10 All-Academic Rankings. MSU's team GPA increased by almost a quarter of a point from 2011-12 to 2012-13, vaulting the team up 34 spots in the process.

"I am so proud of what our team accomplished last season both on the field and off," said head coach Kara Amundson. "This is such a great honor to be recognized on the national level and we are proud to continue the tradition of great OVC teams that have achieved this level of academic success in the past. While competing on the field is important, it is equally important that our players compete at the highest level in the classroom. This award shows that athletics and academics can exist harmoniously and that success in both areas, while it takes hard work and sacrifice, is possible."
While it was the individual student-athletes that did the classwork, academic success, much like softball, is a team effort. The Racers' academic counselor, Meagan Short, knows better than anyone the individual and team work that went into last season's GPA.
"This award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication that every girl on the team puts into their academics," said Short. "It shows that they do not settle for mediocrity, but give their best in whatever they do."
Murray State athletic director Allen Ward echoed Short's sentiments.
"This is an outstanding honor for Coach Amundson and her team and one that is very well deserved," said Ward. "Coach Amundson is committed to building a top-notch softball program here at Murray State and this proves that her student-athletes are as committed to her vision in the classroom, as they are on the field."

This year's Division I rankings were led by Alabama, which came in at 3.690, followed by Kent State at 3.666. However the Crimson Tide was edged for the highest GPA overall divisions by Division III Emerson, which turned an impressive 3.700 GPA. Fellow OVC member UT Martin also made the Division I rankings, clocking in at ninth with a GPA of 3.500.
The Racers are currently in the middle of their fall season and have won all four games thus far. MSU will close out the fall two weekends from now when it hosts Kentucky Wesleyan Oct. 4, followed by Lake Land Oct. 6. Friday's doubleheader is set to begin at 6 p.m., while Sunday's doubleheader is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
