Racers Ready for OVC Opener at Jacksonville State

The Racers open Ohio Valley Conference action as they travel to face Jacksonville State. The contest marks the first time the Racers have faced the Gamecocks in the conference opener.
The game marks the third time in the last four seasons the teams will play in Jacksonville. JSU came away with a 38-35 victory last season at JSU Stadium. MSU is 0-5 all-time on the road on the series.

The two teams are meeting for the 11th time. After the Racers came away victorious in the first meeting, the Gamecocks have rattled off nine-straight victories.
In each of the last three meetings, the game came down to the final possession. In each contest, the Racers had the ball late with a chance to tie or take the lead. The last three meetings have been decided by a total of 17 points.
The Racers hit the road as they open Ohio Valley Conference action at Jacksonville State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and can be seen live on the OVC Digital Network.

The Racers won the first meeting between the two schools, but the Gamecocks have responded with victories in each of the last nine games.
Last Year vs. JSU
Murray State scored five rushing touchdowns, but it was a Jacksonville State field goal in the fourth quarter that was the difference in the Gamecocks 38-35 victory at JSU Stadium.
The Racers are 27-38 all-time in conference openers. MSU has lost seven of their last eight OVC openers.
OVC Road Openers
Saturday's game against Jacksonville State marks the second-straight season the Racers have opened conference play. Last season, MSU opened OVC action at Eastern Illinois. That game marked the first time since 2007 the Racers opened OVC play on the road.
Turnovers to Start Season
The Racer defense has forced at least one turnover in all four games this season. This marks the sixth time since 2000 the Racers have had at least one turnover in each of the first four games. The 2003 team forced a turnover in all 12 games, while the 2002 team forced a turnover in the first 11 games. MSU forced a turnover in the first five games last season.
Powell Nears TD Record
Walter Powell is closing in on the modern-day record for touchdowns scored at Murray State. Powell currently has 26 touchdowns (23 receiving, 2 punt returns, 1 kickoff return) and trails only Willie Cannon's 28 total touchdowns. Powell is tied with Reggie Swinton and Terrence Tillman. Harlan Brodie (1927-30) holds the all-time record with 40 touchdowns.
Skinner Records 1st INT
Senior Darrian Skinner recorded his first career interception when he stepped in front of a first-quarter pass against Bowling Green and returned it 14 yards.
The Racers return to the friendly confines of The Track as they welcome Tennessee Tech. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
