The Murray State women's soccer team swept the adidas® OVC Weekly women's soccer honors on Tuesday, the league announced. Julie Mooney won the award for her offensive performance, while Taylor Stevens took home the defensive honors and Savannah Haberman netted her second consecutive goalkeeper award.
"It is a great honor to win all three awards," said head coach Beth Acreman. "It is still early in the season, but to have these players recognized is really nice for them. All three players have worked extremely hard in our first six games, along with their teammates who have also contributed to the overall success of our team."
Mooney picked up the second award of her career this week, by finishing with two goals and two assists over two matches. On Friday at Alabama A&M, Mooney scored once and picked up two assists in the 10-0 win.
She then followed that performance by scoring the lone goal in the 1-0 win over UALR at home on Sunday. Volume and accuracy played a key role in the two goals by Mooney on the week, as she took a team-high 11 shots, but also placed seven of those on goal.
Stevens played 155 of 180 minutes in the two wins for the Racers this week and helped pace a defensive unit that allowed no goals over the two matches. She also helped limit the opposing offense to just 24 shots over the two-game stretch, with only 15 of those going on goal.
Haberman continued the great start to her collegiate career by spending 135 minutes between the posts and not allowing a goal last weekend. Haberman recorded her third shutout of the season on Sunday in 1-0 win over UALR and also combined with Kylie Lawrence in Friday's 10-0 win over Alabama A&M for a shutout.
On Friday, she notched two saves at Alabama A&M and then recorded a season-high 10 saves against UALR on Sunday. In 335 minutes in goal so far this season, Haberman has yet to allow a single goal.
Since the OVC expanded to three honorees for the weekly awards at the beginning of the 2006 season, a sweep by single team has only occurred six times. With this week's sweep, Murray State joins Eastern Kentucky as the only two teams to accomplish the feat twice. The Racers' first sweep came last season when Veronika Pribyslavska, Halle Pinkham and Latesha Stevenson won the honors on Sept. 18.
The Racers will take this week off, before returning to action next week with two games in Alabama. On Friday, Sept. 13, the Racers will play at South Alabama, before travelling to Troy on Sunday, Sept. 15.
