Racer Golf Hosts 5th Annual Drake Creek Invitational
9/6/2013 10:18:00 AM | Women's Golf
The fifth annual Drake Creek Invitational will be hosted by the Murray State women's golf team (Sep. 9-10) at the Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, Ky.Â
A shotgun start will kick off both mornings with 36 holes of stroke play Monday and 18 holes to finish the tournament Tuesday.
The Drake Creek course will play to 6,178 yards and to a Par of 72. Â
Of the eleven teams competing, six are Ohio Valley Conference members including Austin Peay, Belmont, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State and SIU Edwardsville as well as the Murray State Racers. Non-Conference teams competing are Marshall (Conference USA), Western Kentucky (Sun Belt), Dayton (Atlantic 10), Jackson State (South West Atlantic) and Northern Kentucky (Atlantic Sun).
Murray State, Austin Peay and Northern Kentucky will be bringing three players for individual competition and Western Kentucky, Dayton, Tennessee Tech, Belmont and Tennessee State will be bringing one.Â
The first three years of the Drake Creek event had a decided OVC flavor with the Racers winning the championship twice including a win in 2011 by nine shots over Morehead State and the same margin over Eastern Kentucky in 2009. In 2010, Morehead State scored a 13-shot win over Western Kentucky with the Racers finishing third.
In 2012 the Racers finished in sixth place behind Central Arkansas who won the event with a total of 906 ahead of runner up Arkansas State (911), Belmont (919), Columbia (922) and Southern Illinois (927) which made up the top-5. Alexandra Lennartsson had the best finish for the Racers in 10th place with scores of 73-75-79=227.
A dramatic end to the 2012 tournament included Central Arkansas' Julia Roth and Arkansas State's Anna Carling staging a seven-hole sudden death playoff for medalist honors. The 18th hole at Drake Creek was the only hole used, where Roth finally won with a par on the seventh time through.
The Racers have never won the medalist honor in the three events, but have two runner-up finishes with Morgan Cross in 2011 and Andrea Downer in 2009. Morehead's Marisa Kamelgarn set the scoring record in 2011 with scores of 71-73-71=215.Â
