The Murray State women's basketball team starts a three-game road stretch Monday when it travels to Nashville to face Belmont. Tip-off from the Curb Event Center in Music City, U.S.A., is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Racers picked up their first OVC win of the young conference season Saturday, 76-68, over arch rival Austin Peay at The Bank. Murray State led for nearly the entire 40 minutes, sans a brief Austin Peay lead at 4-2.
The Racers led by as many as 14 in the opening stanza and took an 11-point lead into the locker room at the break. However, Austin Peay would not go away. The Lady Govs trimmed leads of nine points or more down to six once and four on two separate occasions, the final time with just 44 seconds to play. MSU responded brilliantly by making nine of 10 free throws in the final 31 seconds of the game to seal the 76-68 win.
Keiona Kirby led the Racers by posting her fourth 20-plus performance in a row with 22 on Saturday and was followed by Taylor Porter, who tied a career-high with 17 points. Janssen Starks added 14, while Julia Fox had 12 to round out the four Murray State players in double-digits.
Â
Despite being located just 123 miles apart, Monday will be just the ninth meeting in series history between Belmont and Murray State and the second since the Bruins joined the OVC last season. In the first OVC meeting between the two teams last season, the Bruins came away with a 59-50 victory over MSU in Murray.
The Bruins lead the all-time series, 6-2, and have never lost to Murray State on their home court, where MSU is 0-3. This will be the Racer's first trip to the Curb Event Center since it opened in 2003, as the last time the two teams met in Nashville was 2001.
Â
Belmont enters Monday night's contest after dropping a 29-point decision at UT Martin Saturday, 82-53. The Bruins were limited to just 32.7 percent shooting from the floor in the contest, while the Skyhawks made baskets at an alarming 57.4 rate. Despite playing 14 players, Belmont only managed to get one into double-digits; Jordyn Luffman who scored 18 to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.
The Bruins are currently 6-12 on the year and 3-2 in OVC play after Saturday's loss. Luffman currently leads all scorers the Bruins with 18.8 points per game and also leads on the boards with 7.1. Belmont has scored an average of 65.2 points per game this season, while allowing opponents to score 71.0. The Bruins only pull down 37.5 rebounds per game, which is ninth in the OVC. However, they rank second in rebounding defense, giving up just 37.5 per game.
