The Murray State women's basketball will travel to the Land of Lincoln this weekend for two games and will start the trip Saturday at SIU Edwardsville. Tip-off from the Vadalabene is set for 4 p.m.
Belmont overcame an 11-point first half deficit to top the Racers, 67-57, Monday night in Nashville. The Bruins tried to pull away early, as they went on a 10-2 run just minutes into the game. The Racers, however, responded in kind by reeling off an 11-2 run of their own. After trimming an 11-point MSU lead to just six at the half, Belmont carried that momentum over to the next stanza and steadily chipped away at the Racers' lead for the first 12 minutes of the half.
With 7:50 remaining in the game, the Bruins' Katie Carroll hit one of her three second-half 3-pointers to put her team on top 48-47, a lead Belmont never relinquished. The Racers did not go quietly, as they quickly erased a four-point lead and tied the game with 5:56 to go. The Racers were able to battle back and cut the deficit to just one with 2:09 remaining, only to have Belmont end the game on a 9-0 run to rally for the 10-point win.
Jessica Winfrey and Jashae Lee dominated the boards for Murray State in the contest ,combining for 25 of the Racer's 52 rebounds in the game. Winfrey posted her 10th double-digit rebound performance of the year with 15, while Lee added 10 for her third. Despite scoring a season-low 57 points, the Racers placed two players in double-digits in the contest. Taylor Porter scored 12, while Janssen Starks added 11 to lead Murray State in the absence of leading-scorer Keiona Kirby.
Â
The series between SIU Edwardsville and Murray State is a young one, at just eight meetings. The Racers are 5-3 all-time in those contests and 4-0 all-time against the Cougars in Murray. The two teams met each year in 1985-87, but did meet against until SIUE began its transition to Division I and the OVC in 2010. The Racers have won just once in Edwardsville, a 67-59 victory during the 2011-12 season, but have lost in each of their other three trips to the Vadalabene Center.
Â
The Cougars will enter Saturday on a four-game schneid, having not won since Dec. 28 against Belmont at home. In its last game, SIUE dropped a tough road loss at Jacksonville State, 71-68, moving its record to 4-13 overall and 1-4 in the OVC.
CoCo Moore led the Cougars with 25 points and was the only SIUE player to reach double-digits in the contest. Ashley Capotosto also had a good game for SIU Edwardsville, scoring eight points, pulling down a team-high eight rebounds and going 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Tierny Austin, who missed the last game, leads the Cougars on the year with 12.6 points per game, while Moore scores 12.1. Austin is also her team's leading rebounder at 7.4 per game and is followed by Micah Jones who hauls in 5.3.
SIUE currently gives up 72.6 points per game, while only scoring 63.2. While the Cougars currently shoot 39.8 percent from the field, most points do not come from beyond-the-arc where they make just 3.2 3-pointers per game, the lowest total in the league. By comparison, the Racers currently lead the league in that category, making an average of 8.9 per contest.
