For the third time this season, Murray State's Jarvis Williams and Cameron Payne have been named Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week and Freshman of the Week in voting conducted by the league's sports information directors.
Williams and Payne helped the Racers to two OVC wins last week against Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State to make MSU 7-1 in league play, tied for the top spot mid-way through the season.
Payne, a freshman from Bartlett, Tenn., now has a five OVC Freshman of the Week awards surpassing the four Lamont Sleets received in the 1979-80 season.
Payne dished out a career high nine assists to go with 11 points in a win over Tennessee Tech (Jan. 23). He scored 16 points in a win over Jacksonville State Saturday. For the week, Payne averaged 13.5 points and six assists. He shot 40 percent from the field and 44 percent from the 3-point line.
Williams, a junior from Macon, Ga., had his eighth double-double of the season against TTU with 16 points and 12 rebounds. For the week, he averaged 12.5 points and 10.5 rebounds. He shot 58 percent from the field.
Jeffery Moss was nominated for OVC Player of the Week. The sophomore from Madison, Ala., had an amazing game against Tech when he hit his first eight shots including four straight from 3-point range. He scored 25 points in the first half and ended with a career-high 31 points on 12-of-18 from the field and 7-of-9 from the 3-point line. Moss added 16 points against Jacksonville State. For the week, he averaged 23.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. He shot 64 percent from the field and 57 percent from 3-point range.
