Softball Closes The Book on Fall Season

With completion of Friday's intra-squad game, the Murray State softball team has now completed its fall season. The Racers went 5-1 over six games in their non-championship segment including a win over regional rival Southern Illinois.
Murray State opened its fall season with two wins lover Lake Land, and then followed with wins over John A. Logan and the host Salukis at Southern Illinois. Murray State returned home a week later and split a doubleheader with Truman. The Racers fell to the Bulldogs in the opener, but bounced back with a combined no-hitter from Mason Robinson and J.J Francis in game two. Those games proved to be the last of the fall, as this past week's games against Shawnee were canceled.
Alexa Becker led Murray State over the six games with a team-high batting average of .667, going 14-for-21 with eight runs, three doubles, two triples, seven RBIs, three walks and two stolen bases. She ended her fall with a .708 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Mallory Young, Brianne Sanders and transfer Kaylyn Zierke followed Becker with each posting a .500 average. Two Racers went yard in the fall, with Maggie Glass and Taylor Odom being the only two to notch home runs. Glass ended her fall season at 9-for-19 for a .474 average, while Odom was 4-for-10 for a .400 average.
Pitching wise, the Racers were led by Robinson who posted a 0.64 ERA with 11 strikeouts, while Francis followed a 0.70 and four strikeouts. Freshman Haven Campbell struck out two batters and had a 1.40 ERA, while senior CheyAnne Gaskey had an ERA of 1.91 to go along with 13 strikeouts. All pitchers made three appearances in the fall, with Robinson and Gaskey pitching 11 innings each, while Francis and Campbell notched 10 frames each.
Murray State will now turn its attention to its season opening tournament, the 8th Annual Red & Black Showcase hosted by Georgia, Feb. 6-8 at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens. The Racers will officially begin their 2015 campaign on Feb. 6 at 9 a.m. CST, when they open the tournament against the Eagles of Coppin State.
