Gold Takes Racers World Series 3-1

Murray State Baseball wrapped up its Racer Fall World Series Saturday with the Gold team taking the series 3-1 after a come-from-behind 5-4 win in game four at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.

In an amazing 8th inning, the Gold team erased a 4-0 deficit with five runs, including a grand slam by Tyler Bearden to beat the Navy team 5-4.

Chad Gendron picked up the win for the Gold with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief on three hits. He also had one strikeout. Brock Downey picked up the save for the Gold with a scoreless ninth inning, He gave up one hit and struck out a pair.

The Navy team struck first on an RBI ground out in the 3rd inning by Jake Fuller. Â In the 4th, the Navy team got a 2-RBI single from Derek Yoder and another RBI hit by Clay Kelly to take a 4-0 lead.

Down to their final six outs, the Gold team got a pair of walks by Downey and Nick Moore to lead off the inning. That set the table for Tyler Lawrence who plated a run on a base hit to cut the Navy lead to 4-1. Matt McGowan singled to load the bases with one-out for Tyler Bearden who gave the Gold team the lead with a grand slam home run over the fence in left centerfield.

Tyler Lawrence was named the series MVP. The Racer sophomore catcher batted .727 and had an on-base-percentage of .812. He had two doubles, a triple, scored four runs and drove in three runs.

Sheldon Baxter was named the pitcher of the Cy Young award of the series throwing seven innings of shutout ball and posting one win. He only gave up three hits.

The Racers are now finished with their fall season and look forward to the spring of 2015 when they open (Feb. 13) at Southern Mississippi.
