The Murray State men's golf squad began play in their final event of the fall Monday at the Homewood-Hilton Garden FGSU Classic in Estero, Florida.
The event is hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University at Old Corckscrew Golf Club.
Duncan McCormick continued his recent good play with a 4-over-par 76 in the opening round which was good for a spot in 25th place.
The Racers were in 13th place after a 320, ahead of Florida Atlantic at 322, and behind Bethune-Cookman at 318. Florida fired a first round 285 to take the lead ahead of Florida State at 290 and FGSU at 296. Loyola-MD, Miami (OH) and Saint Mary's (CA) shared fourth place with a 299.
MSU's Jordan Smith and Preston French were in 56th place each with an 80 in the opening round, while Matthew Zakutney was in 71st place with an 84. Jared Gosser carded an 87 and was in 75th place.
The field of 14 teams was to finish the second round before dark Monday evening. The final round is Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. CT.
Old corkscrew GC is playing to a par of 72 and at a length of 7,393 yards. Old Corkscrew GC is a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course that opened in 2007.Â
