Rifle Has Strong Showing At Ole Miss Invitational

The 10th-ranked Murray State rifle team finished second out of nine teams at last weekend's Ole Miss Invitational in Oxford, Mississippi. Murray State finished with a team score of 4662, just 14 points behind winners eighth-ranked Jacksonville State and ahead of No. 6 Ohio State, No. 11 Memphis, No. 12 Ole Miss, No. 14 UT Martin and No. 18 Columbus State.
MSU's score of 4662 is just 10 points off last week's program record of 4672. The Racers shot a 2313 in smallbore, and then followed that with a 2349 in air rifle.
"It was a good day for our first road match and a nice score," said head coach Alan Lollar. "It was a chance for the young ones to get their feet wet on the road and see a new routine. I thought they handled it pretty well and will only get better. Our smallbore was solid and even though air rifle started slow, we finished about as good in that event as I have ever seen us. It really shows toughness to battle back and finish so strong like that. It was overall good effort and now it's time to get ready for two matches at Nebraska where we have a chance to get better and grow."
For the second straight match, Tessa Howald led Murray State in the aggregate score at 1168, while freshman Ivan Roe followed at 1166. Ben Estes turned in the third best MSU score on the day with a total of 1165, while Kelsey Emme and Robert Broadstreet rounded out the top five at 1163 and 1152, respectively.
In smallbore, it was Estes leading the way at 583, marking the second consecutive match he shot the same exact score. Howald followed at 579, while Roe had 577.
In air rifle, three Racers tied for the best score of the day. Emme, Howald and Roe all turned in a 589 in the event. Estes was only seven points off the lead at 582, with Kaitlyn Wilson following just behind Estes at 581.
Murray State will now travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for two matches next weekend. On Friday, the Racers will take on the hosts and fourth-ranked Huskers, before squaring off with No. 12 Ole Miss on Saturday.
