Five NCAA Tournament teams from 2014 and nine home dates highlight the 56-game 2015 Murray State softball schedule released by head coach Kara Amundson Friday.
Bradley, DePaul, Georgia, SIU Edwardsville and Tennessee all advanced to a NCAA Regional a year ago and are all are feature on MSU's 2015 schedule. Twelve new opponents dot the Racers' upcoming slate, with Murray State heading into the season at 100-84 all-time against the 19 upcoming opponents that it has previously played.
"We are really looking forward to competing this upcoming season," said Amundson. "We were so close to a conference title in 2014 and we think this difficult early season schedule will help get us to that next level. The OVC is expected to be very tough again this year, and I think with the combination our returners, newcomers, off-season conditioning and a tough non-conference slate we will be more than ready come March 15 at SIU Edwardsville."
The Racers will open their 2015 campaign at Georgia's 2015 Red & Black Classic Feb. 6 with Coppin State. While in Athens the Racers will take on Illinois, Winthrop and the host Bulldogs. Following its trip to Georgia, MSU will travel to Birmingham, Alabama where it will do battle with Nicholls State, Gardner-Webb and Samford.
On Feb. 20, the Racers will travel to Conway, South Carolina for the 2015 Chanticleer Showdown. During the tournament, in addition to hosts Coastal Carolina, Murray State will play Sacred Heart, Boston College and Bucknell. Bradley, Furman and Tennessee highlight the opposition for the 2015 Tennessee Tournament, with Northern Illinois, DePaul and Southern Illinois comprising the field for the final early season tournament in Carbondale March 7-8.
On March 14, the Racers will open OVC play against the team that beat them in last year's OVC title game, SIU Edwardsville, in Edwardsville. The following weekend, March 21-22, MSU will travel to Belmont for a doubleheader on Saturday, before its home opening doubleheader on Sunday against Tennessee State.
Other home OVC series include Morehead State April 3, Eastern Kentucky April 4, Southeast Missouri April 11-12 and the final home series of the season, which will include Senior Day festivities, April 25-26 against Austin Peay. Additional OVC road games for Murray State include a three-game set at Eastern Illinois March 28-29, a trip to Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech on Easter weekend April 18-19 and a short drive to UT Martin May 2-3 for the 2015 regular-season finale.
Mid-week games of note include a March 24 visit from Southern Illinois, an April 8 doubleheader at Western Kentucky and an April 21 doubleheader at Evansville. The final home game of the season for MSU will take place on April 29, when the Racers host Memphis.
The Racers are coming off of a 32-23 season that included wins over Oklahoma State, Memphis and an OVC tournament upset of top-seeded host Jacksonville State. Murray State finished the season just one game shy of advancing to its first-ever NCAA Regional by falling to SIU Edwardsville in the championship of the OVC tournament.
