Despite shooting 66.7 percent in the second half, it was not enough for Murray State to overcome Tennessee State, falling 72-65, Monday night in Nashville. The first half was slow for Murray State, as it scored just 24 points in the frame. Despite the low output, the Racers kept pace with the Tigers for most of the first half, even leading, 20-19, with 5:44 to play. However, from that point Tennessee State went on a 17-4 run to take a 36-24 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second, MSU found it stroke. After making just one 3-pointer in the first, Murray State sank six threes in the second, including three in the first six minutes. The Racers also improved their free throw shooting from the first second, going from 7-for-18 in the first to a perfect 7-for-7 in the second. TSU led by as many as 18 in the game, including a 16-point lead with 6:21 left in the game. From that point, MSU outscored the Tigers by an 18-9 margin, but it wasn't enough as the Racers were only able to trim the deficit to as few as five.
Jessica Winfrey led Murray State on the night with 17 points, despite being held to a season-low two rebounds. Taylor Porter followed with 14 points, while Janssen Starks added 11. Nikia Edom led the Racers on the glass with six rebounds to go along with seven points.
Â
Monday will be the 42nd meeting all-time between the Racers and the Panthers, with Murray State holding a 24-14 advantage. The Panthers enter Saturday having won each of the last two meetings against the Racers. EIU moved its streak to two earlier this season when it topped Murray State, 80-74, in Charleston. In Murray, the Racers hold a 15-5 all-time advantage. In the last meeting at the CFSB Center, MSU snapped an overall three-game skid to EIU with a convincing 73-59 win.
Â
The Panthers will enter Saturday at 10-12 overall, 5-6 in the OVC and winner of their last two games. On Saturday, Eastern Illinois defeated Southeast Missouri in Charleston, 53-48. Katlyn Payne led EIU in the contest with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Sabina Oroszova followed with 11 points and eight rebounds.
