7/13/2013 5:52:00 PM | General
Murray State Athletics honored 98 of its student-athletes who earned a spot on the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2012-13 school year.
It was a very impressive to see so many MSU student-athletes honored on the court at the CFSB Center at halftime of the Racers' game with SIUE (Feb. 13).
These outstanding Racer student-athletes all had a 3.25 GPA or higher to qualify for the honor from the OVC.
Racer student-athletes accomplished a lot in the classroom, including 122 recognized by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports for maintaining high academics and a commitment to community service. 178 MSU student-athletes recorded a GPA of 3.0 and above and another 140 were named to the Murray State Dean's List. There were 52 Racers that recorded a perfect GPA of 4.0.
Each year the OVC also recognizes three male and three female student-athletes Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. Murray State women's golfer Delaney Howson was selected as the recipient of the OVC honor. Â The OVC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes. It is given annually to student-athletes of junior or senior status who have accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, as well as leadership qualities. Howson is the 17th Racer woman to win the OVC honor and the 36th among Racer overall to be so honored since it was instituted for the 1981-82 school year.
There were 20 MSU student-athletes that earned the OVC Medal of Honor. The award is given to the student-athlete who has the highest GPA in his or her sport among the OVC member institutions. Those from Murray State who were OVC Medal of Honor recipients included: Sophie Hillier (golf), Tessa Howald (rifle), Paul Ritzheimer (baseball), Jordan Althoff (cross country), Sonja Murphy (soccer), Kayla Harbin (soccer), Leslie Bridges (softball), Shelby Kosmecki (softball), Jarred Koerner (cross country), Tyler Brown (golf), Erica Howard (softball), Greg Guest (baseball), Christian Duncan (football), Shauna Wicker (soccer), Jordan Smith (golf), Delaney Howson (golf), Bridget Stichnot (track & field), Wendi Zickfield (volleyball), Brock Rydecki (football) and Veronika Pribyslavska (soccer).
