The Murray State women's golf team looks to earn the program's ninth Ohio Valley Conference Championship title April 21-23 at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
The Racers begin their week in Alabama with a practice round Sunday at 12:20 p.m.
The 54-hole event starts Monday at 10:30 a.m. for the Racers who will be teeing off with Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State competitors. The three day event consists of a round of 18 holes each day. The winner of the tournament will represent the OVC in the NCAA Women's Golf Tournament.
The field of competitors in the OVC Tournament includes Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Murray State, SIU Edwardsville, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
Murray State will be represented by the lone senior and team captain Delaney Howson (73.3), sophomores Sophie Hillier (79.4) and Abbi Stamper (80.1) and the freshman duo of Sydney Trimble (77.8) and Jacklyn Van Meter (77.9).
The Racers currently have two in the OVC top-10 scoring averages as Howson ranks first (53rd in NCAA D-I) and Trimble ninth. Howson also has the best round in the OVC this season with a 6-under-par 66 (Sep. 14) at Clarksville Country Club.
MSU enters the OVC Tournament ranked third in scoring average at 305.7, JSU is first at 302.1 and Morehead State second at 305.5.
The Racers finished third last year at the OVC Tournament with a score of 920, only four shots behind champion EKU. Howson placed fifth with scores of 76-78-74=228 and joined Alexandra Lennartsson, who finished third, on the OVC All-Tournament Team.
In the 20 years of the OVC Women's Golf Championship, the Racers hold the record with eight titles and are hungry for their first since 2010. Murray State has produced five medalist winners in the event with the last in 2004. Nikki Orazine was the winner in 2004 at the Country Club of Paducah and is the Racers' most recent MSU Hall of Fame inductee in 2012.
The OVC event returns to The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail for the first time since 2008. The OVC Tournament was held in Dickson, Tenn., at Greystone GC from 2010-13. In 2009, the OVC held the tournament in London, Ky., at Crooked Creek Country Club.
The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals was named as one of the top new courses in 2004 by Travel + Leisure Golf. The course will play to a par-72 and 6,203 yards for the OVC Women's Championship.
The men's portion of the OVC Tournament will also be played on the The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals, April 25-27.
The All-OVC award winners will made known at a banquet Monday evening after the first round.
