Men's Golf Takes on the OVC at The Shoals

The Murray State men's golf team will compete for the Ohio Valley Conference Championship title April 25-27 at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
The Racers begin their week in Alabama with a practice round Thursday at 12:40 p.m.
The 54-hole event starts Friday at 9:40 a.m. for the Racers who will be teeing off with Eastern Kentucky and Belmont competitors. The three-day event consists of a round of 18 holes each day. The winner of the tournament will represent the OVC at the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.
The field of competitors in the OVC Tournament includes Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Murray State, SIUE, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin.
Representing the Racers will be junior Jordan Smith (Murray, Ky.), sophomores Jared Gosser (Russell Springs, Ky), Preston French (Lexington, Ky.) and Duncan McCormick (Morganfield, Ky.) and freshman Matt Zakutney (Paducah, Ky.).
The Racers are currently led by French who has the 12th scoring average in the conference (74.1) and Smith in 13th place with an average of 74.2.
MSU enters the OVC Tournament ranked seventh in scoring average at 297.3. UT Martin leads the field with a team average of 292.7 followed by Tennessee Tech with 292.8.
The Racers finished fifth last year at the OVC Tournament with a score of 584, The OVC event was cut to 36-holes due to bad weather. Patrick Newcomb earned the medalist honor and his second consecutive Player of the Year distinction after impressive rounds of 69-70=139.
In 52 years of the OVC Men's Golf Championship, the Racers hold four titles and are hungry for their first since 2010. The Racers have had an impressive 12 medalist honors, three of them coming in the last six years.
The OVC event returns to The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail for the first time since 2009.
The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals was named as one of the top new courses in 2004 by Travel + Leisure Golf. The course will play to a par-72 and 7,187 yards for the OVC Men's Championship.
The All-OVC award winners will be revealed at a banquet Friday evening after the first round.
