French & Gosser Pace Racers At OVC

Murray State's Preston French and Jared Gosser each fired a 2-over-par 74 to lead the Racers in the first round of the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
French started the morning off strong with two birdies in the first five holes and made the turn with a 1-under-par 35. At the time he was in fifth place. Coming home he was still 1-under when a double bogey at the 18 meant settling for a 74. For the round, French had four birdies.
Gosser started slowly and was 4-over-par after the first two holes. He settled in and played the final 16 holes at 2-under-par.
The Racer sophomore duo is part of an eight-way tie for 14th place. Only four stokes is the difference between 14th place and fifth place. There are nine players in the field of 55 competitors that are under par after the first 18 holes and there is a three-way tie for first place at 4-under-par 68. The top round was carded by Jacksonville State's Camilo Aquado, Marco Iten of Austin Peay and Ted Moon of Belmont.
Jacksonville State has a six shot lead with a 280, which is six shots clear of Austin Peay at 286. Eastern Kentucky's 292 put them in third place.
MSU's Jordan Smith finished the round in 39th place after firing a round of 79 while Duncan McCormick carded an 81 for 44th place. Rounding out the scores for MSU was Matt Zakutney in 50th place after scoring an 83.
The Racers finished the round in eighth place in the field of 11 teams with a team score of 308.
The top-5 was rounded out by Belmont (293) in fourth place and SIU Edwardsville (298) in fifth. The rest of the field included: UT Martin (299), Eastern Illinois (304), Murray State (308), Tennessee Tech (316), Morehead State (320) and Tennessee State (321).
The Shoals is playing to a par-72 and 7,187 yards for the OVC Men's Championship.
Round two of the 54-hole event begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. on the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals. Zakutney will hit the first shot of the day for the Racers from the first tee at 8:50 a.m., followed by McCormick at 9 a.m. and Smith at 9:10 a.m. Gosser starts at 9:20 a.m. with French anchoring the team at 9:30 a.m. The Racers will be paired with Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech.
