The Murray State softball team returns to Racer Field for the final time this season this weekend to host conference leaders SIU Edwardsville in a three-game series. On Saturday, Murray State will join the fight against breast cancer when it partners with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association to "StrikeOut Cancer." On Sunday, the Racers will honor Leslie Bridges and Morgan Harrell with senior day festivities.
The Racers suffered a mild setback last weekend as they went 1-3 over four games in the eastern portion of the Commonwealth. MSU began the trip by dropping a pair of games at Eastern Kentucky Friday, before coming up with a split Saturday at Morehead. Murray State was shutout in the first game of each doubleheader, including losing a 1-0 heartbreaker at Morehead on walk-off single up the middle. Mo Ramsey led Murray State on the weekend by going 6-for-14 for a .429 average to go along with two runs, a stolen base and just one strikeout in 14 plate appearances.
Murray State and SIU Edwardsville have met on 13 previous occasions with the Cougars leading the all-time series by a slim 7-6 margin. Last season, the Racers closed the gap in the series by sweeping a doubleheader in Edwardsville, 2-1 and 3-1.
The two teams have played just four games in Murray; single-games in 2010 and 2011 and a doubleheader in 2012. Murray State won the 2010 meeting and the second game of the 2012 doubleheader, while SIUE won the 2011 contest and the first game of the 2012 doubleheader.
The Cougars will enter the weekend at 24-19 overall and an OVC-leading 16-3 in league play. Last week. SIUE completed a four-game sweep of the two OVC schools in Nashville; taking doubleheaders at Tennessee State and Belmont. The Cougars have now won 12 of their last 14 games and have not lost an OVC contest since March 30 at UT Martin.
Haley Chambers led by going 7-for-12 with three runs, three double, two triples, a stolen base and six RBIs. In the circle, Chambers moved to 11-1 in OVC play by tossing a pair of complete-game shutouts and striking out 19 total batters.
On the season, Chambers leads the SIUE staff at 15-12 overall with a 1.98 ERA, a .175 opponent's average and 191 strikeouts, the second most in the OVC. Offensively, Chelsea Yankolovich leads the way with a .312 average, 12 RBIs, 12 walks, five doubles, a home run and team-highs of 43 hits and 28 runs.
