Racers Turn In Solid OVC Round 2 At The Shoals

The lone junior of the Murray State men's golf team, Jordan Smith, carded a one-under-par 71 to lead the Racers in the second round round of the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
Jordan started off the morning strong with two birdies on the first nine but made the turn with an even-par 36 after a double-boogey on the sixth hole. One the back nine however, three birdies on the last four holes were able to help Smith end the round with a one-under-par 71 and move from 39th place to 24th. Smith ended the round with six birdies, one boogey and two double boogeys.
Jared Gosser finished his round in 33rd place with scores of 79-71=150 while Preston French carded rounds of 74-79=153. Duncan McCormick and Matt Zakutney were able to improve from their first rounds after firing rounds of 81-75=156 and 83-74=157 respectively. McCormick finished the round in 41st place while Zakuntey improved to 46th place.
Jacksonville State continues to hold the lead on the tournament with a 9-under-par 567. Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay are tied in second place with team scores of 573.
The Racers finished the second round tied for eighth place with Tennessee Tech in the field of 11 teams with a team scores of 308-298=606.
The top-5 was rounded out by UT Martin (575) in fourth place and Belmont (584) in fifth. The rest of the field included: SIU Edwardsville (598), Eastern Illinois (604), Tennessee Tech (606), Morehead State (627) and Tennessee State (629).
The Shoals is playing to a par-72 and 7,187 yards for the OVC Men's Championship.
The final round of the 54-hole event begins Sunday at 8 a.m. on the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals. Zakutney will hit the first shot of the day for the Racers from the first tee at 8:50 a.m., followed by McCormick at 9 a.m. and French at 9:10 a.m. Gosser starts at 9:20 a.m. with Smith anchoring the team at 9:30 a.m. The Racers will be paired with Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech.
