The Murray State Racers came home with an eighth place finish at the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship in Muscle Shoals, Ala., at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals.
For the third time in four years, rain got the best of the event and forced it to be cut to less than the planned 54 holes. The 55 competitors tried to get the final round finished today. However, heavy rain in the north Alabama area made the course unplayable and the championship was decided on the 36 holes that were played Friday and Saturday.
The Racers' scores of 308-298=606 placed them in eighth, tied with Tennessee Tech and just behind eighth place Eastern Illinois at 604.
Jordan Smith led the Racers with a spot in 22nd place with scores of 79-71=150, while Jared Gosser placed 32nd with rounds of 74-78=152. Preston French placed 36th with rounds of 74-79=153. Duncan McCormick had scores of 81-75=156 and Matt Zakutney finished in 46th place with rounds of 83-74=157.
Jacksonville State was the champion at 567, ahead of runner-up Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay each at 573. UT Martin (575) and Belmont (584) made up the top-5. SIUE was in seventh place at 598.
The final round was looking good until rain set in and play was stopped at 12:02 p.m. After an hour-34-minute delay, the teams were sent back to the course where they played in rain until 2:49 p.m. There were four groups who were not able to finish nine holes, so the event reverted to the second round totals.
The OVC Championship in each 2011, 2013 and 2014 has been reduced to 36 holes because of bad weather.
Austin Peay's Marco Iten was the medalist with a score of 136.
The Fighting Joe Course played 7,187 yards and to a par of 72.
